Johanne Borthne (1978, Norway) joined Powerhouse Company as a partner and design director in 2017 and is responsible for the Norwegian branch of the practice.
Johanne holds a master’s degree in Architecture from the Institute of Landscape and Urbanism at Oslo School of Architecture and Design, which she graduated from in 2006. Between 2010 and 2017, Johanne was a founding partner of Superunion Architects in Oslo. The office won several international competitions for major schemes in Norway, including a public square in Asker in 2011, a public space project named ‘Ruten in Sandnes’ in 2012 and the masterplan for Skeiane in Sandnes in 2014. In 2014, Wallpaper magazine named Superunion Architects among the top 20 of the world’s best young architecture practices in its directory. The founding partners received one of the most prestigious cultural recognitions in Norway, the Anders Jahre’s Prize for Young Artists, in 2014.
In addition to her practice work, Johanne has been involved in teaching architecture since 2007. She is a course leader, tutor and external examiner at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Johanne has also taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Architecture (KADK), the Bergen School of Architecture (BAS), the KTH School of Architecture in Stockholm and at The Berlage in Delft. At The Berlage, Johanne has been part of a three-year research project named ‘Project Norway’.
Johanne’s expertise is design and concept development, urbanism and urban development as well as project management. Johanne has been included on several architectural juries and has given lectures all over the world. In 2014 she participated in the Sino-Norwegian Architects Forum at Xi’an, China, in the TEDxOslo in 2013 and at the Day of Architecture: Norwegian Sustainability, Haugesund, in 2012. At Powerhouse Company, Johanne is the responsible partner for the Norwegian projects such as the masterplan and design of the NRK (the main media headquarter in Oslo) and two housing blocks in Sandnes for BaneNOR Eiendom. She is part of the concept development in selected projects in the office.
