Roelant Nijwening (1970, The Netherlands) has joined Powerhouse Company in 2018 as a project architect after working at EGM architects for 16 years. He graduated from the Technical University Delft as a building engineer in 1995.
Roelant is experienced in designing larger complex projects and has been working on housing, penitentiary buildings and medical centres (cure and care). His biggest accomplishment so far is the design and realisation of the 70.000 m2 ‘Jusitiëel Centrum Zaanstad’, which is the biggest prison in the Netherlands. Since 2016 this facility houses about 1100 inmates in an efficient and secure yet humane environment.
In his designs he is conscious about the importance of the human scale, which he addresses by introducing a comprehensible routing structure, spatial qualities and a tactile use of materials. He believes that the integration of the various technical aspects of a building is crucial in order to create high quality design. He seeks collaboration with different disciplines to accomplish this integration while maintaining high standards in designing inspiring and comfortable architectural environments.
